First Came Desire

“I am glad it cannot happen twice, the fever of first love. For it is a fever, and a burden, too, whatever the poets may say.” – \
Daphne du Maurier

First came desire
From the moment he saw her
Not a split-second later
Instant attraction
A spontaneous reaction
And in his heart, a raging fire

Then came obsession
The fire he couldn’t tame
He can’t quench the flame
Many sleepless nights
Even when he turned off the lights
Wherefrom this emotion?

Then came respect
When at last, they met
That day, he won’t forget
When she spoke, her wisdom showed
Her talents that heaven bestowed
Beauty, goodness, intellect

Then came love
Undying, unconditional
Romantic and yet rational
He can’t live without her
Now until forever
His angel from above

It is love beyond obsession
Love with respect and adulation
In his heart, now an all-consuming fire
When first came desire...
