More to Life

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain,"
Dolly Parton

A book is more than its leather binding
More than the gilded font in its title
It’s the tales in the pages unwinding
The crux of the matter, that is vital

More than a warm skin and a beating heart
Life’s more than the millions of breaths we take
Moments we spent together or apart
All the countless memories that we make

Life’s more than a steady palpable pulse
It means family and childhood friendships
Life’s never confirmed by just your vitals
But embellished by social relationships

Life is a closed loop between birth and death
Pages of a book cover to cover
Vivid remembrances in depth and breadth
From frigid winter to blazing summer

Life’s appreciated through our five senses
Pleasurable when it’s warm to the touch
But when too warm, there’s bad consequences
A question of too little or too much
While our taste buds like sugary sweetness
‘Tis unhealthy, well-being we must watch

Confluence of good and bad memories
It’s the sum of sad and happy moments
Amalgam of pleasures and miseries
Fusion of serenity and torments
Neither blackest nights nor whitest lilies
Life’s all shades of gray amorphous pigments

Life’s both physical and emotional
Truly we focus merely on those things
Sadly we forget concerns spiritual
Often, we miss out life’s many blessings
Our earthly stay, a short sabbatical
But our life thereafter everlasting!
