Seventy and Shining

She wakes with grace, no hint of fuss,
Still queen of all she sees and hears
Though joints may sometimes creak and cuss,
She faces time with laughs, not fears
She zips through tasks with practiced flair
Then claims she’s slowing—where? my dear?

You think that age can slow you down?
You wear your years like royal crown
Each laugh line’s proof you’ve lived with style
You’ve made these decades well worthwhile

She’s quick to smile, and slow to scold,
Still veggie-strong, she’s plant-powered bright
She’ll preach that tofu breaks the mold—
Though I still dream of steaks at night
She gardens like a seasoned sage
(But weeds might tell a different page)

You think that age can slow you down?
You wear your years like royal crown
Each laugh line’s proof you’ve lived with style
You’ve made these decades well worthwhile

She talks to birds and names each tree
Then swears the squirrels wink and wave
She laughs with such sincerity
She makes the grumpiest moments brave
A soul of gold, a heart of cheer
And lucky me—she’s still right here

You think that age can slow you down?
You wear your years like royal crown
Each laugh line’s proof you’ve lived with style
You’ve made these decades well worthwhile

I wrote this poem to celebrate my wife's 70th birthday. Her friend Genevieve wrote a melody for it and our daughter Joanelle sang it at her birthday celebration.
