The Ice Skater

A Tribute to my Daughter Amanda...

Her shiny steel blades crack the hard frigid ice
As she glides through the frosty deserted surface
It’s freezing, an arctic morning, perfect otherwise,
And she would rather be here, than any other place!

Swish! Swish! The sounds envelop the skating rink
While she did cross-overs on ever-growing circles
Thump! Thump! Her heart beating in harmonious sync
As beads flow from her brow like little pearls

She floats on the ice and weaves a thing of beauty
Choctaws, twizzles and mohawks are her instruments
And the cold ice is the canvas as she writes poetry
Composing melodies by stringing incredible moments

She powers to a jump, soaring skyward into the air
What was a fraction of a second seemed a lifetime
Her blade touches the ice quietly like a feather
Skill, power, beauty, a feat graceful and sublime

She spins like a camel, and spreads like an eagle
She splits like a falling leaf, onward to an arabesque
Each move crisp yet ethereal as if done by an angel
A well-played symphony, a painting so picturesque

Every day she’s in this deserted, frozen universe
To achieve perfection in the craft she has chosen
For she knows it will take a lifetime of labors
Just for one glorious moment; thrills yet unspoken
