It is me

It is me.

I am stripped down
to my most naked intentions;
having worn so many coats
and less than noble guises.

You don’t know it yet,
but I’m that sneaky thief
who stole your priceless everything
in the middle of that night;
to feed my lust for anything
that would ease the ache of knowing
that whatever coat I wore
on any given day,

It wasn’t me.

The me that I once was
had long ago been traded
for some cheap trick or fix,
or whatever held my fancy
to it’s ransom at that time,

So many coats had fallen
been stolen, sold or pawned,
by the time that night had come.
It wasn’t me that pulled that caper
but some heartless, mindless fraud,
who became the tattered coat I wore,
so I could hide out in plain sight
before your unsuspecting gaze,
until the me that I once knew
could return to what was me.

I am stripped down
to my most naked intentions,
confessing what I was
and those things I did.
It wasn’t me that stole
your every precious thing
on that less than perfect night.

It wasn’t me.

By grace I stand before you now,
the me I thought was lost forever;
to tell you of these crimes and sins.
Not for your forgiveness
nor understanding,
for that is surely in your hands.

But to celebrate this blessed truth
and share with all who care to hear;
it is me who stands before you now,
stripped down to
my most naked intentions;
not the sneak thief in that tattered coat.

It is me.
