When a baby is born
it is hungry
it is cold
and it is crying
desperate for love and attention
but not every baby receives such affection

When a child enters his first day of elementary school
he is shy
he is scared
and he is confused
eager to be noticed
to fit in with the rest of the kids
but not every child receives
the comfort, guidance and reassurance
that they belong

When a child becomes a teenager and enters high school
the first thing that he sees is a hall full of teachers
then he sees different groups of other teenagers
huddled together in different areas of the hall
his first instinct is to blend in with these teens
he desires to know what it feels like
to be popular
to be seen
to be wanted
but not every teen gets to experience
the beautiful feeling of being appreciated

When a teen reaches adulthood however
it is because of such emotionally traumatic events
that they struggle to fit in with other adults
that they have trouble forming close relationships
that they have trouble finding romance
that they always end up miserable and alone
that they have a hard time identifying with people

It was I who was
hungry,
cold,
and crying
for your love
and attention

It was I who was
shy,
scared
and confused

It was I who wanted
to be noticed
to feel as if I belonged

It was I who desired to know
what it feels like to be popular,
what it feels like to be seen
what it feels like to be appreciated

And now,
It is I who struggles to fit in with other adults
It is I who has trouble forming close relationships
It is I who has trouble finding romance
Thus I always end up alone and miserable

When you first gave me attention
When you first gave me even a minute of your time
You made me feel like a person again
You made me remember that I was still human

When you put your arm around me
I enjoyed every second of it
All I wanted was more
Will you give me more?
