Passion And Purity

During times of sadness, when smiles are just a faint memory,
What is the point in remembering?
When the only comfort you have is so mercilessly stripped away,
Why do we bother to shield ourselves?
When despair and hope strike while wearing the same face,
Why do we fight back?
When the world is shrouded in unimaginable darkness,
Where can we hope to see light?
What is there to hope for?

To cry for what you long for, wiping away the tears
To scream for what you fight for, fighting away your fears
To believe in something no matter what people say
Is the proof of the passion that carries you through the day.

The fact that you remember that smile,
Makes it much more than a memory
The fact that you’re standing,
Means that you’ve found strength
The fact that you’re here, that you’re breathing,
Is a miracle in itself
The fact that you still believe in such a subtle thing as light,
Means that there is something to hope for

Passion is energy, burning faith
As powerful and indestructible,
As a Phoenix flame
Purity is its partner, that resonating glow
As white, as pure
As spotless as snow

For your faith to remain untainted,
By the condemnation of those who doubt
To run forward without looking back
Picking yourself up again when you hit the ground
Going forward in an ascending flight
Stifling your tears during the day
Overcoming your urge to cry in the night

In a world that believes you should stop
Continue running, continue hoping
Because it is that hope that will protect you
Move you forward
Passing through each day’s rain

(2011)

My high school had an event relating to the topic of passion and purity and my guidance councilor had me commission a poem for the book they were selling at the event. Now it comes off as being extremely green to me but there are still sections of it I'm particularly proud of and thought to share.
