Losing a Parent

For my mother, whom I love even though she's gone

Pain, anger and sorrow;
a persistent longing, too.
Gone forever, she left you here.
She won’t come back for you.

Some days you miss her
when you remember the times you shared.
Other days you hate her
and doubt she ever cared.

He ran out, she won’t look back
although you wish she would.
I thought a mother loved you
more than anyone ever could.

Selfishness and weakness;
mistakes you’ll never make.
A knowledge not many learn:
you know you’ll never break.

You’re smart, you’re brave,
you are independent.
You’ll make it on your own.
If they didn’t teach you anything
they taught you to be strong.

“Life’s not fair,” says a distant teacher;
Lessons learned from far away.
“Broken hearts make good people,
You’ll be whole again someday.”
