Holiday Incarceration

November 2011

It’s mid-November; the Holidays are near
Our families will celebrate with one less person
Because we’re here
Mentally together while distances apart
This holiday season family is heavy on my heart
Away from my family for the first time and only
Fortunate to be with friends to feel less lonely
Thanksgiving Day turkey with a glass of wine
Place an empty glass on the table in remembrance of mine
Dad says, “It’s just a tradition” to say Grace
For him, I’ll do the same on Thanksgiving while in this place
Although I miss you, this is a blessing in disguise
I’m learning to think before I act to ensure my decisions are wise
Christmas fastly approaches as we head into December
This distance is only temporary; it’s important to remember
Festive decorations you’ll place on our tree
Lights, love, and laughter
The only thing not present is me
I’ll make the best of this Holiday incarceration
Realizing my full potential
Planning my new destination
The life I live from this point on is entirely up to me
My options span farther than what my eyes even see
So while I’m away for the Holidays
Know that it’s worth it
I’m learning better ways; practicing for better days
