The White Hills of La Cloche
from the Canadian Shield , Northern Ontario
Once cloud-high mountains,
shaped and worn
from hundreds of millions
of rainfalls, windfalls, frosts.
Rounded now
into high white hills,
all anciently, minerally grained:
fine white hats
of quartzite,
brimmed and boughed
in cedar and pine;
whose towering crowns
catch each sun and sunset,
each first light, moonlight,
water-light.
