The Beaten Path

Without heartbreak, half of poetry would cease to exist.

The path to my heart is no paved highway.

The miles of gravel roads and speed bumps

Scare away the most determined of travelers.

Now all that remains of a road is a dirt path overgrown with doubt.

Few believe there is reason to travel a path this abandoned.

So my heart sits,

Waiting and dreaming for someone to take the risk.

You were the first to travel this path.

To brave the rough edges and dangers.

With prize in hand you head back out to into the world.

But once again the path becomes rocky and unstable.

This time you fumble my heart

Turning your back on it and running away.

Now my heart waits

Concealed again by a forest of insecurities and fear

For another traveler willing to brave the untamed path

To my broken heart.
