A Drowning

She closed her eyes
And felt her soul relax.
Pain was coming.
But for now
She embraced the peace
That washed over her.

It was only yesterday
That happiness held her
In its grasp.
But then
There was a sudden wrong turn.

Just then, she died a little,
Then a lot,
Then a little.

She still remembers the moment
When being completely dead
Became more appealing
Than being partially alive.

Better this way.
Cradled in water.
Going out the way you came in.

Now her lungs ached a little,
Then a lot,
Then a little.

“Air!” they cried.
“Please... we don’t want to die, too.”

But control was finally hers.

“I have no more air.
So you will also have none.”
