The Last Night

The night arrives swiftly, as He
Sucks out the last remaining light
Through a hole in the western sky
Just out of sight
Beyond the horizon.

As the purples and pinks fade to black
And all that remains
Are the white crumbs
He missed,
I think of you.

I close my eyes
And wish for your steady, strong hands
To lay upon my head
And slowly caress my fragile halo,
Running your fingers through my hair,
Brushing an errant strand
From my flushed cheek.

Happiness pulls the covers to my chin,
Turns off the light,
And closes the door softly behind Her,
As I drift off to sleep.

And in the morning
When His strength gives out
And He can’t hold the light
Another minute longer,
The explosion of light in the sky
Will reflect in the water
Of my sleepy waking eyes
And mimic the glow
In my soul that knows
It will feel your touch today.
