Smiles

I asked a friend, “What makes you smile?”
As I asked that question my own answers began to form.

What makes me smile …

The Innocence I see on the face of my little cousin
The beauty of nature, untouched by man
A hug from someone with no ill intentions

These things make me smile
A pure smile to show the delight
That manifests itself even through the
Darkness that lingers in my mind …

But smiles are not all pure
Are not all manifestations of joy
They can be a mask for when the darkness appears
To take away all light from ourselves …

A smile we use to fend off any attack that may come after …

A smile that appears …
With the rolling of our eyes
A Shake of our head
And a smirk unknown in the presence of joy

A smile that forms when innocence is lost
When nature is modified and destroyed
All in the name of mankind
And when those closest to us
Give us our final hug, leaving a knife in the back.

I pray my smiles stay true.
Remains only for joy.

For the sake of those close to me.
For the sake of the world around me.
And finally, for my own sake.
