The trunkless legs* ignored detritus the colossal mass of time space and
motion rolling on the trunk the face engorged millennia ago
and a second ago the amorphous hulk of meaningless force
rolling on blowing away the greeks and alexander bowling
christ off the mount tearing him off the cross crazily angled
timbers left behind the vast mass rolling on sweeping buddha
mohammed away like chaff crushing rome and the crushers of rome trampling charlemagne and shakespeare
swallowing cathedrals Beethoven ocean liners
darwin airplanes hitler factories mother theresa
all the mighty and all the meek all the victors
and all the vanquished earthquakes floods
wars not even interruptions and
squeaks emitted from
still living fragments
unheard as they are
whirled about within
the insentient mass
before they die
