Heart of a Child

Tears at Bedtime

Trees
swayed in shadow
Outside Grandma’s window
room swathed in burgundy
velvet and silk

Christ Child in portrait
a halo above him
crucifix warning of
losses to come

Babies awaiting
birth, then protection
how, when four
was the age
she was given

Save Daddy, save Grandma
the cruel witch is coming
how to protect them
with nowhere to hide them

Years later still burning with
terror and longing
worked like a slave still
no other way known

Failed at so many
heart bleeding rose petals
red like the quilt
in her grandmother’s bedroom

Given an angle
to nurture and cherish
wings soared like eagles
successful at last

Torn from her bosom
arms outstretched in yearning
fingers spread crying
she still couldn’t save them

again
