A hundred feet away

Ode to those people who hide behind their phone as we approach on the sidewalk...

from a hundred feet away

your heart begins to race,

your fragile serenity takes flight

your feet speed you on, better pick up the pace

no! don’t rush, that’s not how you want to be

but you feel the calm sink without a trace

you shrink inside, you hold your breath, urge to run.

from two feet away

that thing in your hand

can shine a light in the darkness

Yet can’t illuminate your path in the darkest night.

you’ve locked your eyes on it, held out in front like a shield

from a hundred feet away you’re a neon sign

the thing you fear most is the thing you’re also desperate to find

every stranger who swings past like a pendulum

I wonder if you see a wrecking ball instead

you are in those passing eyes

if you never look you’ll never see

from a hundred feet away

open your arms

open your eyes

lift your face and smile

you may find the universe smiling back at you waiting to come home
