road to nowhere/path to somewhere

you don’t realise what you’ve carried all this
way until you set it down on the floor
of an emergency room, the pink cloud drifts,
everything is illuminated white.
you took on water because you never
learn, unlocked doors in a deadbolt country,
and the things you loved give you headaches now.
i won’t make promises that i can’t keep.
i will elevate my worn soles, watch the
reds turn to roses turn to fresh peaches.
i will be gentle, find the infinitesimal
tucked in a supermarket gerbera,
in sunday best, in scrambled eggs, and the
rest is just an alphabet of hours.
