Kol Nidre, All Vows

Are we, as humans, qualified to vow?
Are we, as humans, required to vow?
Yet what would life become without the human vow...

Vows are our anchors in a sea of limitless choice
Our borders defining haziness in our lives
 Our guideposts on the path
We blaze, we follow, we know

But to be human is to be fallible
Human certainty is not absolute
We are incapable of creating eternities

It may come to pass that by following our guideposts
We find ourselves on a path of
 Unhappiness, disappointment, despair
We are imprisoned by the way we define our lives
Our anchors render us inert

(Stillness possesses surprising force
There is comfort in the known
In a world of constant change, we hold fast to the familiar
Even when it prevents potential)

But for those open to evolution
How can we achieve the balance between
Defining life and finding freedom?

By choosing to own our errors
By finding strength in embracing failure
And through our own force
Lift the anchor
Erase boundaries that imprison more than define
Blaze a new path

And inevitably vow again
