The Stars Fell

They sparkled and lit up our imagination,

So we tried to make our own.

I see them yonder, caged in,

Such beauty that we pretend they’re on loan.

Four little yards up, not light years,

Yet still I cannot touch the streetlights,

Hot little bulbs so close my eyes tear;

How disappointing upon close sight.

They’ve taken even the stars from us,

For our comfort and our pleasure,

For their pockets and less fuss,

For workers to have longer days to measure.

Do you remember the warnings in the sky,

The heroes whom the gods pitied?

Do you recall immortal souls who fly,

Blessed for heeding the natural creed?

Nay, we’re blinded by our greed.

The stars fell.
