Don't Buy Me Roses

Divorce is now so common, yet could never happen to me,
But little things, I guess, occur, which at first we never see,
Or perhaps we try to hide them like we did from Arlene,
But all these things kept mounting up, until we had our final scene.
The judge, I guess, was human, cause he gave Arlene to my wife,
He didn’t know, as my wife did, that Arlene was my life,
But he said that I could see her at least four times a year,
Four times, God, but time has passed and the first time now is here.
Well I called the house, called my child, then I heard her on the phone,
And I said “Hello Arlene darling, what can I bring you home?”
Well what she said just broke my heart, cause I could feel her pain
And I guess other kids in broken homes, must feel the very same,
And I know i’ve got to share it, incase you think the only course
Is to rush towards a courthouse, and get a quick divorce,
But dont take my word for gospel, listen to a younger head,
Listen to my daughter Arlene, for these are the words she said.

She said, “Daddy, don’t buy me roses, i’d hate to see them die
Like the love that you and mummy shared, before you said goodbye,
I’d hate to see their beauty, so slowly fade away,
So please don’t bring me roses, when you visit me today.
And Daddy”, she said so softly, “don’t bring me a toy,
Cause since you left us on our own, the house has lost its joy,
And please oh please dont bring me sweets, or my favourite candy bar,
Cause I don’t feel like eating, while I wonder where you are.
And Daddy, dont bring me comics, cause I dont want to laugh,
Not since you and mummy, tore my heart in half,
And Daddy, no cakes or biscuits, don’t buy me clothes or shoes,
And please don’t bring me money, to try and cure my blues,
But Daddy, don’t come empty handed, there is something you can buy,
And it’s something I need so badly, as each lonely day goes by,
Oh I know I need my Mum and you, and the love I knew for years,
But I can’t have this, so bring a hanky, to wipe away my tears.”
