Memories of Mary

For my sister who left us today.

High platform shoes,
Seventies mullets,
Tight perm hairdos,
Fadgies like bullets.

Fadgies that harden,
only fit for the birds,
All found dead in the garden,
Or at least so I heard.

Caramel donuts,
And elephants feet.
Or elephants foots?
They were always a treat.

Few nights on the white rum,
Few nights on the skids,
An open house welcome,
For me and my kids.

After ouzo for peps.
Can she walk? Yes she can.
If not sure on steps,
Just roll under the van.

Warm corned beef slice,
Freshly baked cakes,
Would always suffice,
At our family breaks.

A quick fiery temper,
A lash with the tongue,
But a warm heart of gold,
Underneath the words flung.

Dont be quick to see fault,
Be quick to see mirth,
A small pinch of salt,
Salt of the earth.
