Old Stone

A stone in the lake old as water.
Older than any question.
Older than dirt
and more stubborn.

Round.
Round from the waves that keep coming.
Round like the curve of the Earth over open water.
Round even in a jagged world.

Let our love be a stone in the lake
Old as water,
Taking its time.
Tossed and turned
and some nights put to sleep in the soft sand.

Throw our love into the water
and let it sink–
Don’t try to save it.
Let it be tossed and turned
and someday reach shore.
