The Canyon

aka That Smell

Whoa! It’s a little chilly. I better roll up my window.
And those clouds, they’re up to something.
I can see it in their eyes. You can always tell by the eyes.
Flash! Boom! Crackle! Drip!
And so it begins.

A drip becomes a sprinkle.
I start my wipers.
Of course the driver’s side catches at the bottom,
makes a fuddle, and laughs at my frustration.
A sprinkle becomes a parade dedicated to flood season.
  #MotherNatureHatesThisPlace... Apparently
I think I’ve had enough of these “blessings,”
   as some would call them.

But oh! That smell!
I almost forgot about that smell. I better roll down my window.
Who am I kidding? I’m not rolling anything.
We’re already reminiscing about what that means.
It’s amazing how time flies.
And there’s nothing like a good cliché.

Back to my thought.
That smell. That soothing, serene, and blissful smell.
It’s the best part.
I would close my eyes and put my feet up,
but that would take me right into the creek.
We have enough of those stories on this hellish
   commute we call “The Canyon.”

One flower covered cross after another.
Every once in a while you see a blue sign,
“Dedicated in the memory of (...).”
It’s always a sad sight to see.
And with every “blessing,”
is another cross destined to be flowered.

Speaking of flowers and crosses,
   I’m reminiscing again.
Good memories can be overshadowed
   by the final result.
I try not to forget the little things.
They are the important things when reminiscing.
The smiles. The laughter. Even the pranks I miss.
   Some of the pranks.
The heartfelt and philosophical convos.
The love and respect: specifically for those
   diligent and committed.

One in particular.
I was so serious. I was so uptight.
It started with the smiles;
   then the laughter;
   and finally the pranks.
These things taught me...
Whats the word? ...
Enjoyment.

A weird concept for me at the time,
   but it still benefits me.
I always end up reminding myself
of that concept when I begin to
   reminisce.
I love that word.
Reminisce.
I can’t even spell it with out going to a dictionary,
   but who cares.
For those who do care,
I don’t care that you care.
Mind your own.

Back to my thought.
I’ve got my air conditioning going.
The 2-40 kind.
Two windows down at 40 MPH.
I always found that joke intriguing,
and it reminds me of a good friend.
Most people would find that dumb,
   but I don’t care.
I’m sticking my head out the window.
Drops of water scraping my face.
Wind piercing my nose and ears.
That smell is too good to pass up.
There are not many things in this world
   that trigger this feeling.
But “The Canyon” does.

My mind wanders.

Forgive my lack of writing skills. It may not be perfect, but the feeling I get is real.
