Lemonade

a cookbook is a strange place
to find a recipe for the mind
but the notes tell me the lemon tree
blooms year ‘round, never stops;
while one branch sweetens the air
with blossoms, another drops it’s bitter fruit.

so much like humanity     the lemon tree
to produce bitter fruit among the blossoms
life is sugar and lemons    in youth    taken separately
lacking the wisdom of the recipe
while age makes lemonade, worn like a blanket
to warm cold shoulders in the night
