#10

I awoke, dying in the night, gasping for the breath that would not come.
Left arm numb.
Was this the total sum,
Of a life?

My love beside me, oblivious
As I steadied breathing, slowed the pulse, drove out thoughts, that meant to do me harm.
We’re all alone,
When all is done.
A single thing, each, every one.

What is this hard wired lie
That whispers early on,
You are meant for greater things,
represented by the dash between two dates.
Finally.

Not tonight, not yet. There’s so many things unsaid, undone.
The darkness mocks and hints
That I have run my course, tale told, the needle idling at the end of the song, waiting for the arm to scythe
And end it.
