Soliloquy

Good people deal with awful things,
There’s just no way around it.
But if there was another way,
What to do if you found it?
If you had a trillion dollars
How would you likely spend it?
The world is far too broken
For some chump money to mend it.
And if you could save the world,
Where would you even begin?
You can’t heal things from without.
No, you have to start within.
The truth is that we’re all awful,
We’re all awful together.
There’s no use running from it
Or you’ll be running forever.
Instead of trying to save the world
Might I make a suggestion?
I believe there just might be a way
To solve that age old question.
Send out all the nukes!
Depopulate the planet!
Spread fire all across the globe!
It can’t get worse, now can it?
Look, I know, trust me, I do,
I get why you’re upset,
But if nothing in this world is fair
Who cares what end we get?
Just give me a chance to explain,
Sit down, please, take a breath.
I have some charts and graphs
To prove the answer’s death.
Alexander the Great, the crusades,
Stalin, The First World War;
Now there’s a great big body count,
But we can try for more.
Colonization, North Korea,
Then of course the trail of tears.
I mean it’s like we eat a diet
Of death and waking fears.
And let’s not forget slavery
Or World War Number Two!
Look at the charts! I can’t defend
Us being here, can you?
Most of those happened long ago,
And I agree, but still
That’s not a lot of comfort
To George Floyd or Emmet Till.
One in three women are raped,
Ten percent of us are dead
From starving, even though the world
Has enough to share their bread.
Zoom in on any continent,
Go ahead take your pick.
I guarantee you won’t find something
That won’t make you fucking sick.
The wars, the rape, the murders,
The hate and genocide.
You really think we deserve
To live? To coincide?
And now that we’re here face to face,
Why don’t you take a minute
To look way deep inside your soul
And share with us what’s in it?
You think that you deserve to live,
Think you deserve to thrive?
Why? ‘Cause you’re not as bad as Hitler
Means you get to be alive?
And before you get more upset know
I’m just as bad as you,
I might even be worse
Depending on your point of view.
See, I get so tired of fighting
For goodness that’s not coming
Especially when we deserve less
Than life: we deserve nothing.
Oh I have one more quick query,
And I don’t mean to be crass,
But what have you contributed
You stupid spoiled ass?
Oh what, you write your books and poems
To one day make enough
To help the helpless people
When you can’t even help yourself?
Come here real quick, come to the mirror,
Please, come and take a look.
You think the hatred in your heart
Can be cured from a book?
Because that’s just the thing, you ass,
Don’t you listen? Don’t you see
That you’re just another piece of shit?
I know, see, ‘cause you’re me.
Rushing into crumbling buildings
Giving aid and help
Doesn’t take away the things you’ve done.
It doesn’t save yourself.
You can try making the world
The best choice behind the doors,
But you and I both know the truth.
And now the choice is yours.
