Orpheus

Do not look back my dear Orpheus,
I have been in this dank darkness for so long.
Some spirits who reside here howl, others laugh, others cry.
So dark I cannot see their faces, or do they have faces?
Perhaps the sounds erupt directly from their souls.
Do not look back my dear Orpheus,
For this is a miserable place, and I fear it will be a permanent home.
Do not look back my dear Orpheus,
The gods have given you a gift,
the chance to bring me up
to feel the light,
to take full breaths,
to be in flesh
to freedom.
Do not look back my dear Orpheus
or else I will again disappear
and never again be of your world.
You know the way,
and your foot is sure,
But what of creeping doubt?
That is what I fear.
Its friends distrust and unease are near.
Trust that I am at your back,
that though my footsteps you may not hear,
there is a thread from my heart to yours that will not sheer.
Do not look back my dear Orpheus,
keep the straight line,
So that I may follow your sturdy steps.
So that I may be by your side in the light.
