Car Death

A wide array of images
Spread out in my mind
Can’t focus on any of them
It happened too fast
If only I can stay awake
Don’t black out…

What happened first?
Can’t remember
Wait– yes– the impact -
Must have been like
A kaleidoscope with only two colours
And they’re both grey
The sickening thud
Grey explosion of gunpowder
Just the sickening thud
No glorious flames
No lightshow
Just the dull, grey scraping sound
And blood
That must be blood– yes–
Sticky on my face
What’s that stinging in my arm?
We must have been travelling - oh man!
That corner came too quick
It’s coming back to me now
In peaceful serenity

There was a roar
Not a constant roar
An undulating wall of noise
Pistons ramming up and down inside their tubes
Tyres getting hotter and softer
And biting better into tarmac
But they let go - just for a moment
No idea how fast I was going
Too busy laughing and moving to the beat
All of us were
A flash of green
Was it green?
We must’ve been going so fast…
Coming towards us like a plague of grasshoppers
Just a big green blur
Then a feeling like we were in space
Or a small boat on choppy water
That’s when the tyres let go
Were the flames after that?
We got out of the way
I’ve got it!
Mick was there - he got us out!
It was Mick!
Good old Mick!
Could always trust Mick
But - we were floating
The roar died down a bit
Then - where’s Mick now?
Where am I?
Then the explosion
No - the grinding thud
And the puree
Mashed up, dull thud
It must have looked spectacular
Why?
We forgot what the music sounded like
Just heard the tunnel sound
Decrescendo of the motor
The tyres let go
We were floating
We must have hit something
I remember the crunching and the grinding
All coming from the roof
The lights went out
Then the grey haze
Forgot what we were doing
How did I get here?
What is that stinging in my arm?
It’s all white in here
I can hear lots of things
What was in between?
A grey blur like stir-fry gravel
Do something please! It hurts
We must’ve been traveling…
I’m going to sleep now, okay?
What’s that on my face?
