I Asked For Something

Accepted the consequences
I’ll always be wondering
I want answers
Stopped believing
There’s truth out there
One day I’ll be cold
I asked for something
Not sure I got it.

See her across the street
She walks and I try not to make it obvious
I stop as she hails a taxi
I watch her climb into the back seat
I go home and stare at her photograph
I took it days ago
I lie awake until tomorrow
I wait until the day after and lie awake still
I find her late in the afternoon
She turns as I approach
She feigns courage, but hates my face.
Who is she really chasing?
I’ve been observing her for weeks
She stops in a park
Looks left and right
Nobody goes there
She hasn’t seen me
She wears a scarf of deep red
So dark - almost black
Her coat fits well
Warm against this stabbing cold
Nose small and eyes
Not revealed behind sunglasses
She looks without happy things
Warm things; sure things
I’ve been watching her and
Her cool, defined,
Nothingness shape.
