Hearts in the Night

We watched as the streets
Fell from under our feet,
Giving way to valley and gorge,
We wrapped our arms fast
‘Round the craters and cracks,
And wept as the miles were forged.

We spat all our hate
At the bars of those gates,
As they swallowed the lives that we’d made,
We fired out our curses
And hollow coerces,
At an order of shadow and chain.

We climbed to the tops of our towers,
And flew our flags fierce in the night,
But the answers we found,
Just echoes and cloud,
In a world shrinking slowly from sight.

As the rain took to drown
Making oceans of towns,
Our roars became rusted and thin,
So we sang for the living,
The grateful, the giving,
And prayed for the strength to swim.

We took what remained
And began to reclaim,
Through letters and telephone lines,
We rallied our wounded,
As brothers, saluted,
And kept our stride strong through the fire.

Now we race to our roofs and our windows,
And set our hearts loose in the night,
For the things out of reach,
And the lives that we keep,
Sat safe, but just out of sight.
