Friends. (Or Familiar Strangers)

Who looked out for you when your back was against the wall?
When you slipped, who was there to laugh when you fell?
You lost a friend, so you called another one to share your sorrow
You needed that voice to reassure you before the tears followed
Who could you call at any time to tell of your latest fuck up?
When family wasn’t an option, whose number did you look up?
Work wasn’t making you happy, you were late on another payment
Things didn’t pan out, your future was crumbling with every moment
That man you hoped to marry was a fraud, that lady didn’t care for you
Who did you call? What voices kept urging you to never give up on you?

You felt like giving up so many times this year, why did you stop yourself?
What made you look at the ledge, and decide it was better to save yourself?
Who brought you a cup of tea that morning when you found out?
You know you wanted to grieve, you felt like getting it all out–
In the open. Suddenly your door opened, there they were with a smile
Transferring their energy force to you, lending you their joy for a while
In that exchange they got weaker, you got a bit more strength to go on
Not just anyone would be happy to share energy, to give their life form
But your friend did, they spoke and asked how they could heal you
It wasn’t their job, but they did it out of a feeling of duty towards you

We are not creatures for isolation, we emanate from a higher force of life
No other animal can share so much of their joy, and so much of their strife
When one person takes your sorrow, they alleviate some of the pain
Energy can only be transferred, so they absorb part of your strain
Corrupting their essence, perhaps in an attempt to help you save your own
And in turn when you look up, in their eyes you might find a temporary home
A place of love, a place of conflict, a place in which you are not seen as perfect
But in your imperfection the magic lies, in there our souls can coexist

Cherish the people who put your mistakes in perspective, you are doing great
Love those who in this hopeless world, still make you have faith
Believe in them, this journey is unknown, its true meaning a mystery to all
Be patient with them, we all make mistakes and will from time to time fall
Don’t envy other groups, instead be thankful you found your own misfits
Friendship is beautiful, in the New Year I hope we learn to cherish it.
