Fatal

inspired by the voice of Lana Del Rey and songs of Paul Cauthen

Mad stars conspiring,
Laced her voice with notes
Of sunrise and rain wispers.
‘t was his fortune’s calamity
To get caught in the nets of it,
To be pulled into proximity
Of those black moons
Curiously orbiting, squinting
While she smiled and made up her mind.

He drank peals of her laughter
In long sips,
As a stallion thirsty,
Chest deep in rush of a current
At high noon.
Her tongue
Pulled on him like the reins
In any direction she chose,
And he took the bit joyously.
Words lost meaning–
Colorlful butterflies
That meander the air.
She kept singing,
Beckoning.
Fatal melody,
If it led him to slaughter,
He didn’t care.

But she cut him loose
At neck breaking speed.
Mid gallop
He came to awareness,
Her song wasn’t with him.
The bond snapped
Like a guitar string,
With a high pitched scream.
She’d flown at midnight,
He was left reeling
In a whirlwind of fury and loss.

And the melody,
Wrapped in sweet desperation,
Echoing in his pain-ravaged memory
Sent him breaking
Through walls of his mind
Ablaze.
Ribcage broken,
Heart splattered,
Raging flame
Chasing
Muscles shuddering
With every effort
To escape
The hot yellow jaws of disaster,
Towards soothing oblivion of a precipice,
Into welcoming fold of the night.

Mad stars...
