Distance

A lament for things that should last.

In the aftermath, I lie awake but still dreaming...
Dreaming of the place I once knew.
In my search for brighter days, I had dug my own grave...
In the very place where the greener grass grew.

When I first found you, you were broken and alone,
stranded where your wings had been clipped.
I stopped, eyes transfixed on a sight such as this.
I took the first step and I tripped.

My heart, freshly broken, skipped a beat and had spoken.
It had seen it’s reflection in you.
And then as time passed, a miracle to behold,
I watched your new wings as they grew.

You took my hand, in my darkest of days,
and pulled me from hell’s wanton grip.
But the sweat from my pain, and the fear and the shame,
caused me to stray and I slipped.

And so came the fall. The end of it all.
I’d slipped and I’d fallen from grace.
And I dropped like a bomb, took the world I had drawn,
and burned it all up in a haze.

And in the aftermath, I lie awake but still dreaming...
Dreaming of the place I once knew.
In my search for brighter days, I had dug my own grave...
In the very place where the greener grass grew.
