Drink Water and Believe in Science

I drink water
and believe in science.
I am a twig
with a swollen
disfigurement.
I often laugh
and sometimes cry.
I run my hands
over bones
in search of omens.
The birds that amused me
of a morning
have deserted now.
I find coffee a comfort
when I confront
the missing birds.
One invisible crow crows.
I crow when I do
something well
and mourn
when I do not.
I wonder if everything
in me is just biophysics,
or just physics.
I think that’s reductive
thinking when
I’m thinking right.
It takes no bones
to see that god
is not an excuse.
God is not
just.
I tell my grandson
not to worry too much
about god,
that he really must
drink water
and believe in science.
