I’d Like To Write a Poem

I’d like to write a poem
that’s a swimming pool,
or even a wading pool would do.
I’d have the sun shine on the first line
and Spring overwhelm the stanza.

I’d like to write a poem
that’s a diving pool
or a crystal water lagoon,
where you can’t even see the bottom,
and the smell of sunblock is in the air.

I’d like to write a poem
that grows to be an aging tree,
with leaves that shelter
and stoic roots that stand
against all the tests of time,

I’d like to write a single poem
that has the Dalai Lama’s heart
and the skin of a new born baby.
I’d like to write a poem
that’s a lighthouse by the stormy sea.
