This is Not an Elegy for the 45th

This is not an elegy and,

no trick of the light,
no jammed shut door,
no rancid rhetoric
or sleight of hand
should be allowed to keep you now.

The door is open,
walk into the light,
the coffin is made
and measured for you
to just climb in and get carried away.

Don’t get carried away,
don’t confuse fear with respect,
don’t confuse the cheers with jeers,
leave the desk, and don’t scratch the wood,
you’ve written this story for way too long.

This is not an elegy,
we do not care.
The light is moving across the floor
and brightening up the desk and our room.
Go on now, go on out, because

this is not an elegy.
