Where Will We Be?

What road are we travelling?
What road do we wish to be on?
Is this the road to heaven,
passing through the Valley of Death,
or the road to hell with the destination close by?

Are we on the paths of righteousness?
Are we on the way to glory?
Are we in the direction of blessings
or will we suffer the curses?

Where will we be in a year from now?
Will the president become a dictator?
Will the forests keep dying
and the animals be killed,
or will we be reborn a little at a time?

Where will we be ten years from now?
Will the air be more poisonous and the water be acid?
Will we have regained the democracy lost in the fray?
Will we have learned the lessons of history
and turned away from the things we are doing?

Where will we be a hundred years from now?
Will we be not even a memory of our dust and decay?
Will we have murdered ourselves in our sleep
or be woken up to the peril and singing a new tune?
It’s all in our hands now but it’s slipping away.

What road are we travelling?
A choice is at hand:
we can sew to the wind and give birth to the curses
or revert from the curses and bless all we find.
I’m unsure it’s in our hands now but I know it’s slipping away.
