We might think that COVID is finished
Thirty months since it first came along
The president declared the pandemic “over”
Let us fervently pray he’s not wrong
The vaccines were designed to help us
But too many Americans refused
And so the losses kept on piling up
Many thousands of lives have been used
The fallout from those losses are real
The wasted lives are not coming back
Lost sisters, brothers, neighbors and friends
Leave some tremendous holes, and in fact
Their deaths could have been prevented
It’s a terrible crime that they weren’t
Our nation will not be the same without them
And what are the lessons we’ve learnt?
