Smiling Through The Fence

There you were smiling though the fence
On the day they left you only cents
What then could be your one offence?
To make them show such high pretence

That fence, a barrier to them and you
Was it your smile that made them slew?
Their guilt concealed they formed a queue
To homage make and false adieu

Behind you stands the hope of Rome
An empire drawn from a golden throne
But like all great states its end will come
Did you know that it would be undone?

Was that knowledge hid in your smile?
Did you see fear and hear their bile
Whatever took them that extra mile?
That falsehood, smiling through a fence?

Note: You might be in a position of power, but you should never smile falsely at a tiger
