The Place I'm In

Long days ago when no things had changed,
The day before me was within my range.
Safe and well in familiar home,
Without any fear to play and to roam.

This place I’m in is my entire world,
Nothing can alter, and tomorrow ‘will’ come.
Only the clouds in the sky will become unfurled,
So the day stays with me and will not be undone.

The well-known paths and ways I took,
Each step renewed and understood.
Safe in these surroundings that I know well,
I hear the sound of the local church bell.

All things were set as those days rolled by,
The swallows were flying in the summer sky.
My friends and I in our own world we grew,
Until the day came to bid them adieu!

Formality came and directions were changed,
Expectations of work and a future to build.
My life was turned round and rearranged.
There were few ways to follow for the newly unskilled.

The place I was in is now another’s life
So where am I now? In the midst of strife?
Nothing can replace that place I was in,
Only now with longing, can in my mind I begin.

(2006)

Looking back to our yesterdays, we were so much younger then, not much to worry about with none or few commitments we enjoyed our lives in the security of our home, our community and our friends, and then we grew up, and our world changed
