Annals of Wood

Keeper of time, nature’s stubborn child,
planting its feet far beneath the earth,
finding its way through the dark soil
under the forestial floors
inside the damp hoary earth,

rising up with the hands of nature,
sticking out its supple head to
look at the sky and breathe,

starting a new life in its formative years with
a microcosmic growth that’s dead to the eyes,
but yet full of life with its slow waters
and fruited blood circulating
through its dark veins,
building a stronghold to support its upward growth
and a tempered rudder to steer it high into the sky,

its year to year rings that mark each year,
an armored suit to never be shed,
a thick bark to weather the elements
employed by father time to count the years,
to spread its forestial lore to all its inheritors
from nature’s busy network
of high intelligence and prudential dreams
passed down to its heirs with
empty minds and muted speech,

to spread the secret silent lore
as it has done since the spirit moved
across the waters and will keep
on going with
the passing of time, year by year,
the annals of wood accumulated,
one life giving life to another
and one forest staying alive.
