Battle’s Outcome

The battle raged and the dreaded hands of death
robbed some of the soldiers of their final breath.
They lay dead, strewn across the battlefield
with their hands still clasping their battered shield,
their spirits tearfully encased in the wings of white
as death carried them upward on a solemn flight.
They fought like hell as they were trained to do
and sacrificed their lives for me and you.

Because of them the peace treaty was signed
and their bodies were placed among the enshrined.
They deserve all the respect they rightly garnered
as Memorial Day was set forth in their noble honor.
We owe our freedom to those as they lay
deep down in a grave on this very special day.
The battle’s outcome was that you and I
can live in peace, a truth we can’t deny.

I wrote this for my recitation at a Memorial Day Service.
