The Sacrificial One
The man of courage, honor, and duty
who knew his place in the wicked world,
my martyred friend who went to war for me,
who saw the love of freedom in my heart
and the fear of death in my eyes,
saw the need to become my guardian angel,
to watch over and fight for me
and everyone else like me,
lies in the cold cold ground
with all the other fighters
who died for me and everyone else.
Today I honor him and all the other soldiers.
This is my poem for the Belt and Beyond Memorial Day issue.
