Upward Pilgrimage

As if the soil down under was a warm cathedral
on a journey to a downward pinnacle
where the voice of God reached the seed
and told it to rise up and follow his lead
up through the soil and into the summer’s air,
the leaf stalk rises as it climbs each stair.

It peaks its head out to where it laid claim
and spreads its leaves to the sun and rain
as it woships its God who gave it strength
for its pilgrimage from the roots so entrenched.
