Los Angeles Love Ballad

J.S.B.

I can still see her smile
in my ever-shifting mind
Such a supernova song
It had a melody and rhyme
It shone bright like silver
It broke the star shine
piercing the void of Beauty’s love
and making me question all I knew

As shine chased the shadows
she faded away
I faced, held, and kissed her
on that morning in L.A
I gave all I owned, she asked me,”Please stay,”
My beating heart was crippled in a forever kind of way

Tears of sapphire orbs
I did shed in the rain
into the red ocean
of my complete, utter shame
The pain broke my heart
Divided, collided,
broken, and lame
The splitting of one thousand atoms
upon a pair of snowflakes

The demons, they chased me
a family of fools
Treating me kindly
then bending the rules
To trust is to love
and to love, one must trust
They killed me in ways that you haven’t heard of

They threatened my family
Devil grins of rust
Gold, Hay, and drugs
held in a Den of Shining Frost
My innocence defiled
and integrity lost
The Anthem of Compassionless Hearts
stain the streets of Hollywood Boulevard

And then like a vision
she appeared unto me
A delicate girl of infinite beauty
A Latina Goddess
something I’d never seen
Dreams fail when I reach
To see Love’s Kingdom and it’s Queen

In a warm L.A. evening
we danced in the street
our eyes gazing at each other
under star fire heat
My hand on hers, her small hand in mine
I have no way to describe or finish this line

If ever there was anyone
she would’ve been my wife
Although we were young
she was gentle, she owned my life
My love was imperfect yet within the night
She was my lover, the first to bring hope into my wasteland of strife

And then the world ended, the death of a dream
Souls torn apart from reality’s scream
Fear all-encompassed, breaking the gleam
of what could’ve been the woman I’d meet all futures with

And now at night, I lay alone
although at times, with others,
they do eventually go
I tell them I love them but they do not know
the scent of her heart, the touch of her soul

Like a nymph in the forest, I see her in dreams
I hold her and live as if I never would leave
We go back to Sunset and walk down the street
proclaiming we are what we are and no one will destroy us

Then I awaken
I hear her voice in my mind
In my brightest high noons
and deepest midnights
A diamond silk Aphrodite
in glowing golden light
and I realize I haven’t lost it all
fear made me give it away

Wherever you are, I know where you’ll be
You will be effortless, floating, dreamlike beauty
in a realm of such distance, I search selfishly
to see your face in the morning, hear you say, “Yo quiero un beso.”

The people I know tell me to stay in today
To slow down, don’t fret, it’ll make sense one day
And yet, in my heart, I write and I pray
to again gaze at the sunrise of love somehow, some way
