Catalina Island 1975
One long winter
There was a little cafe on Catalina Island
on the main street of Avalon
Just down from the wharf
used to be an Italian restaurant
But nothing stays the same
Even here, where nothing seems to change
we used to sit there and talk
about the things that were important to us
and even more that wasn’t
it would usually end with drinking
at that bar around the corner
the one with the live band
and he bowlegged bartender
said he was once a sailor
but now he is just a drunk
like the rest of us diehards
who stayed all year
the dark haired girl from the seafood place
and he guy they called Big Mike
we stayed... when the tourists left
settled in for the long winter
with dewars and coke
or gin and tonic
whatever our poison
when the cold winds started to blow
Here on Catalina
a million years ago
(2004)
i spent a long winter in Avalon and learned many things about myself, people, booze and loneliness...it was a season well spent
