Going Under

He left her heart in fragments,
Constantly reminding her of how she will never compare to the others
Judging the scars left on her skin,
Each marking a battle lost to her thoughts
Never understanding her resentment towards him,
Unaware that he was the source of her pain

Often turning away when tears flooded her eyes,
Leaving her helpless
Drowning in the anguish his indifference generated

She found herself submerged in a sea of desolation,
Unable to keep her head above the dismal waters

Waiting for rescue became strenuous,
Rapidly depleting her tolerance of his antics

He abandoned her among the wreckage,
With nothing left to salvage
And when he thought to rescue her,
It was already too late
Nothing but broken shards of her heart remained,
Cutting his skin as he tried to mend her

Though he felt the physical pain she often inflicted upon herself
He’d never comprehend the emotional distress she experienced,
How he pushed her to the breaking point,
Causing her to stop treading water
And succumb to the idea of going under,
Never to resurface from her wasted life
