A Sonnet to Hester Prynne
Her life’s a solitary walk in the woods
Her days spent in silence, in solitude
No human contacts to alter her moods
And only her own heartbeats to intrude
On her own, she suffers not loneliness
Even though alone, she fears no danger
But rather, she feels contentment and peace
No strife, no resentment and no anger
But alone, she feels no love, no friendship
No arms around to give a warm embrace
No ears to listen, none to share thoughts with
No sorrows, yes! Sadly, no happy days!
For such is the price of isolation
Peace and calm. Not an ounce of affection!

Hester Prynne is the protagonist of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter. She is portrayed as a woman condemned by her Puritan neighbors. The character has been called "among the first and most important female protagonists in American literature". She has the marble coldness of an isolated soul.
