old pair of shoes

"There is health in table talk and nursery play. We must wear old shoes and have aunts and cousins."
- Author: Ralph Waldo Emerson

a love story

serendipitously,
they encountered each other
in the afternoon
of their earthly sabbatical
soon, their hearts and souls
are linked forever
whether together or apart,
whenever practical...
they’ve found in each other
such sweet comfort
one would perhaps find
in an old pair of shoes
no awkwardness, no unease;
and with no effort
they walk while they sing of joy,
not the blues
their spirits attuned,
they know their desires
and they both know
what each other requires!

it’s as it should be
for a second chance romance
not the fire and ice
of a youthful love affair
but the easy ebb and flow
of a ballroom dance
measured breath intakes;
never gasping for air!
not orgasmic highs
from many nights of passion
but a warm soothing touch;
or a loving embrace
no wild adventures
nor thrills of every fashion
but walks on the beach,
while he gazes at her face
for they had all of that
and perhaps even more
in a previous life.
But happiness? Never before!

so, they look forward
to spend whatever’s left
of their earthly days,
their lives intertwined
sharing joys and fears;
and of love, not bereft
the past now buried
in the depths of their mind
every day will usher
new and fresh beginnings
and perhaps even challenges
that will add color
to what otherwise would be
ho-hum daily endings
brighten the hours;
erase yesterday and its pallor
it’s a situation neither of them
could ever refuse
for it’s warm and comforting;
an old pair of shoes!
